Choose, then commit

A friend once sent me a scholarship and asked, "Do you think this one is right for me?"

It was a fair question. The programme matched their academic interests reasonably well, the funding was generous, and they met most of the eligibility requirements. Still, they hesitated.

"I'll keep looking," they said. "There might be a better one."

A few weeks later, they sent another opportunity. Then another. Every scholarship had one feature that made it seem slightly better than the last. One was in a country they preferred. Another offered a larger stipend. Another had a university they had admired for years.

Eventually, the first scholarship closed. Then the second. By the time they were ready to commit, several deadlines had quietly passed.

I think about that conversation often because I see versions of it every application season.

Many applicants are not held back by a lack of opportunities. They are held back by the search for the perfect one.

The perfect country.

The perfect university.

The perfect supervisor.

The perfect scholarship.

The perfect time to apply.

Of course, some opportunities will suit your goals better than others. Research matters. You shouldn't apply blindly. But there comes a point where more searching stops being preparation and becomes procrastination.

I've learned that there is a difference between being intentional and being indecisive.

Being intentional means you understand your goals and choose opportunities that align with them.

Being indecisive means convincing yourself that one more Google search, one more ranking table or one more webinar will finally remove all uncertainty.

It rarely does.

When I was applying, I had preferences too. Like everyone else, I imagined certain universities, certain countries and certain programmes. But as I continued researching, I realised something important. My future was going to be shaped far more by what I did with the opportunity than by whether it perfectly matched the picture I had created in my mind.

That shift changed the way I applied.

Instead of asking, "Is this perfect?" I started asking, "Can this help me become the person I want to be?"

Those are very different questions.

One searches for certainty.

The other looks for possibility.

We've spent the past few months talking about agency, consistency, resilience and becoming. Each of those ideas assumes one thing: that eventually you will make a decision and move.

Growth rarely happens while you're standing at the crossroads comparing every possible path.

It happens after you've chosen one and committed to walking it.

So if you've been waiting for the perfect scholarship, consider this your reminder that it probably doesn't exist.

There are good opportunities.

There are great opportunities.

And there are opportunities that become life-changing because someone chose to make the most of them.

Don't let the pursuit of perfection become another reason to stand still.

Sometimes, the best application you'll ever submit is simply the one you actually submit.
