Building Before You Need It

A few years ago, I came across a scholarship that seemed perfect. The eligibility requirements matched my background. The funding was generous. The programme aligned with my goals.

I was excited.

Then I started looking at the application requirements.

• Leadership experience.

• Community impact.

• Strong academic achievements.

• Clear evidence of professional growth.

Suddenly, I realised something uncomfortable.

The application wasn't asking me to become these things in the next three weeks. It was asking me to prove that I had already been building them.

That was one of the first times I understood that many opportunities are won long before they open.

When a scholarship is announced, most people immediately begin preparing documents.

• CVs are updated.

• Essays are drafted.

• References are requested.

These things are important. But they are not the foundation.

• The foundation is the work you've already done.

• The volunteer project you stayed committed to.

• The skills you developed.

• The initiative you took at work.

• The article you wrote.

• The people you helped.

• The problems you solved.

These are the things that eventually become stories in an application.

This is why I encourage people not to see scholarships as isolated events. A scholarship application is often a snapshot. It captures who you have been becoming.

The good news is that this works both ways. If you feel your profile is not where you want it to be, that does not mean you should give up.

It means you should start building.

• Read more.

• Volunteer.

• Lead something small.

• Develop expertise.

• Create value where you are.

Most people underestimate how much progress can happen in a year. The version of you applying next year can be very different from the version applying today.

We've spoken about goals, agency, consistency, audacity, resilience, and learning from rejection. All of those ideas point to the same thing:

Growth is happening even when there is no deadline. And often, that growth is what eventually earns the opportunity. Don't only prepare applications.

Prepare yourself.
