Not Every Opportunity Is For You

Why strategy matters more than volume

Published 25 March 2026 · 369 words

We’ve talked about starting. About trying. About staying consistent. About handling rejection and starting again.

All of that matters.

But there is something else that becomes important as you keep going: where you direct your effort.

It is easy to fall into the habit of applying to everything. Every scholarship. Every opportunity. Every opening that looks even slightly relevant.

It feels productive. It feels like you are doing the work.

But not all effort moves you forward.

There is a difference between being eligible and being competitive.

You may meet the minimum requirements for many opportunities. That does not mean you are a strong fit for all of them. Strong candidates are not just qualified. They are aligned.

Alignment shows in your story, your experiences, your interests, and how clearly all of these connect to the opportunity.

When there is no alignment, the application becomes forced. You stretch your story to fit. You write essays that sound generic. You submit, but you are not convincing.

Over time, this leads to frustration. You are putting in effort, but not seeing results.

This is where strategy comes in.

Instead of asking, “Can I apply?” start asking, “Should I apply?”

Look for opportunities where:

  • your background fits naturally

  • your experiences support the requirements

  • your goals align with what the programme offers

It is better to submit a few strong, well-thought-out applications than many rushed or unfocused ones.

This does not mean you should only apply where you feel perfectly qualified. Perfection is not the goal. But there should be a clear connection between you and the opportunity.

This also requires restraint.

You will see opportunities that look attractive but are not right for you. It is okay to let them go. Saying no is part of being strategic.

This connects to everything we’ve discussed so far.

Agency means you choose deliberately.

Audacity means you still go for strong opportunities.

Small steps mean you build toward better positioning.

Habits mean you prepare consistently.

Resilience means you keep going when things don’t work.

Strategy ensures that all of that effort is not wasted.

You do not need to apply everywhere.

You need to apply well, in the right places.
