Next steps: Strengthening Applications and Navigating the Waiting Period
Published 4 November 2025 · 745 words

The first time I submitted a scholarship application, I didn’t know what to expect. My heart was racing, my hands were shaking, and for a few seconds, I just sat there staring at my screen. Yes I have finally done it after months of sleepless nights, rewriting essays, checking and rechecking every little document and then suddenly, it was all out of my hands. After clicking submit, I felt proud of myself and nervous at the same time. I whispered a little prayer, exhaled deeply, and smiled. I had done it. But as the adrenaline faded, a quiet uncertainty crept in. Now what?

That moment after you click “submit” is something we don’t talk about enough, that weird mix of hope and fear, excitement and anxiety. You’ve given it your best, but you’re not sure what comes next. That moment and space between “submitted” and “selected” is what we call the waiting season and it’s not easy. At ScholarChitChat, we know exactly how that feels and that is why we came up with a Webinar just for you. It doesn't matter if you’re still perfecting your essays or have already hit submit, we understand the mix of excitement and anxiety that comes with the scholarship journey. That’s why “Next Steps: Strengthening Applications and Navigating the Waiting Period,” was such a timely and necessary conversation.

Led by our guest speaker David Michael, a Commonwealth scholar, current PhD student and mentor who has walked this journey himself, the session wasn’t your typical “how to apply” talk. It was an honest and empowering conversation about growth, preparation, and resilience. David shared his personal journey, the setbacks that taught him patience. David began by sharing his personal story on how his first few applications didn’t go as planned, how he learned from every rejection, and how each setback quietly prepared him for his eventual success. He also shared with us how reading his essay after rejection taught him lessons that shaped his strategy, and the small wins that fueled his persistence. His honesty set the tone for everything that followed.
Behind every successful scholarship story are lessons learned from the ones that didn’t work out.
He reminded us that applying for scholarships isn’t just about getting everything right on paper, but it’s also about telling your story in a way that reflects who you truly are.
- Your personal statement should sound like you, not what you think the committee wants to hear.
- Your referees should understand your goals and be able to speak to your strengths authentically.
- Your documents should be organized, polished, and ready to represent your best self.
David broke down each step with practical guidance that will help both those who are still applying and those who have already submitted. From identifying common mistakes to crafting a clear application strategy, he emphasized that this webinar is designed to strengthen your chances and help you navigate every stage from preparation to the waiting period.
Here I am today encouraging you to see this season not as a pause, but as a preparation ground. Take those online courses, volunteer, join networks and communities, ScholarChitChat is here for you. And most importantly read, reflect and learn something new that adds value to who you’re becoming because that’s what truly makes the waiting worthwhile.
We were reminded that every part of the process matters: the researching, the writing, the revising, the waiting. Each step builds you into the person capable of not just winning a scholarship, but thriving through it. And I am telling you this for free, the waiting period is not wasted time. It’s the moment when your resilience, patience, and self-belief are quietly being built. Every “not yet” is preparing you for the “yes” that will eventually come and when it does, you’ll realize why the wait mattered.

So, if you missed the session, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
